It takes a quite a long gap for any movie or series fan to keep stumbling upon good and classic piece of entertainment one after another but recently after Made in abyss and Ancient Magus' Bride stumbling upon Netflix's Devilman Crybaby
has been a treat. Devilman Crybaby stands out because of four main reasons which is Music and soundtrack, Gore, Sexual violence and Visual animation style. The trippy animation is impressive, its not always there but when its there and when it hits, it so fucking goddamn hits. Music and soundtrack in background is far beyond impressive, its perfect and especially when combined with trippy animation, the result is something from which you can't take your eyes off. Its one of the anime of its kind as a lot of anime barely reach that boundary of nudity but with Netflix's support it totally takes benefit of that and the result is very strange offering the viewer trippy sexual gory violence.
Just because visual representation is so well that doubt was there that it would lack in story factor but it manages to convey a very good story questioning religion, sex, violence, humanity, and many philosophies. At first show takes it sweet and exact enough time that it manages to establish an connection with the character that viewer can care about them. The protagonist of the show due to some accident turns into a demon but is able not to lose himself to the the devil, just like any other superhero origin story. Main character Akira is a crybaby who essentially cries for others n for himself if something bad happens. With his new power he fights other demons which were previously human like himself. For first half series the story seems like a zombie apocalypse as more and more people are turning into demons and devouring other humans. For second half of the series is where exact epic story begins as the setting in the show itself changes quite a bit. The events and incidents which take place after 6th episode are main climax of the story. There are quite a lot of support characters and some for which we don't care about but show gives enough background information about them that they are not completely irrelevant to the story and make sense if some action is committed by or against them.
Its shocking to see that such small series can have so many moments which will last so long that if faced next time with some other violent gore stuff show, there will definitely be a comparison. Topic of nudity will differ from person to person but I did feel that in some moments nudity wasn't necessary but at the same time if it hadn't been there then that scene wouldn't have any meaning in it. Without exaggeration Devilman contains some of the most erotic key animation which really looks realistic because of its animation design.
Is it worth watching ?
Considering its just 10 episodes(i.e 20 mins. per episode = 10x20=200 mins = a little over more than 3 hours) and definitely no sequel, Its a must watch but Devilman crybaby is not for everyone. It takes darkness to extreme as it can and as violent as it can, as sometimes it doesn't even makes sense. Anime fans will have amazing time during Devilman crybaby but people should watch this not because of its controversial elements like sexual gory violence but as this show achieves great heights in displaying true nature of humanity and what humans can do for their own survival when it comes to their own safety.
